You’ve
probably heard the expression ‘Still waters run deep’ which
basically means the quieter someone appears to be the more likely
they are hiding a secret, maybe a troublesome secret, perhaps one
that could make a lot of money for you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I first
learned to respect quiet people in dark corners at flea markets
when I began trading at those events more than forty years ago,
when I learned it wasn’t uncommon for the real brains behind a
supremely profitable stall to be the man or woman sitting quietly
at the back, while spouse and kids do all the hard work on the
day.
The Bod at the Back is very often the person
who French polished all the furniture and treen (made from wood)
collectibles on the stall, or perhaps he or she repaired cracks in
china and porcelain, or dressed those vintage dolls, or spruced up
oil paintings that cost him or her a few pennies apiece but are
selling now at hundreds of pounds a time.
Once their working week ends, those people are
entitled to time off, which they usually spend at the back of the
stall while keeping a watchful eye on people trading their goods
as well as offering expert advice on demand.
That’s why, if I need help of any kind, such as
someone to repair cracks in an otherwise valuable decorative plate
or remove age stains from a 200-year old print, it’s the person at
the back of the stall I try talking to first.
The reality is, by getting to know regular
traders at flea markets, also boot sales and antiques and
collectors’ fairs, I’ve saved a fortune having improvements made
to items I’ve bought for pennies which eventually fetch much
higher prices on eBay.
That’s why I recommend you visit flea markets
in your area, find them advertised online (search Google for ‘flea
market your area’) or check in local newspapers (usually on
Friday), then set about gathering business cards and contact
details from traders specialising in repairs and refurbishments,
especially those with lots of eager buyers! And if there’s a
queue at the stall, the sign of a very good restorer, have a word
with the Bod at the Back!
Get yourself known to those people, keep their
telephone numbers, and next time you see damaged items going for a
song at auction or boot sale, phone for a quote for restoring your
item for much higher profits later! Then buy with confidence
by incorporating restoration fees into maximum bid prices for your
chosen lots.
