Here are two
ideas I saw working at a flea market which set me thinking about
creating similar items from the public domain and selling them on
eBay.

The sellers
were taking photographs of visitors to the event and converting
them to jpeg format on a laptop on their stall. The
photographs were then overprinted onto vintage cartoons and
advertising posters and printed out onto quality watercolour
paper. They looked absolutely stunning and there was a queue
twelve people long for most of the day waiting to have their
photographs turned into novelty paintings.
I’ve seen pretty much similar items selling
online, not on eBay, featuring photographs overprinted on vintage
magazine covers, also sepia photographs of well known places like
Blackpool tower surrounded by horse drawn buses and the subject of
the photograph representing the conductor or bus driver. One
very popular design is the famous painting of the Mona Lisa with
someone else’s face overprinted!
Such items represent popular impulse buys
online, fetching twenty or thirty pounds a time, and I’ve never,
yet, seen them offered on eBay.
So there’s an idea for you to run with next
time you find a very clearly defined vintage photograph or
magazine advertisement, even a cartoon or well known painting.
The idea is to scan those items onto your computer, then replace
some feature with photographs provided by your customers, such as
their dog’s face on a vintage dog painting, or a male family
member’s face on a very early magazine for golf enthusiasts.
